Mr. Paul Lee, Business Development and Planning Director, Reed Elsevier Pte. Ltd.

We understand your business
The Media & Leisure industry in Asia-Pacific is undergoing rapid change and outstripping overall economic growth in many countries around the region.

Pay television players have started to see real returns in recent years. The i-Pod economy has taken a firm hold in Asia and MP3 has proven to be the first killer application for digital media, though mobile video in the cutting edge Korean market is now bucking that early trend. Radio has unparalleled penetration but remains hugely under-exploited in comparison with the US and Europe. Local content, especially from Japan, India and China, is starting to find its way into overseas markets. The consumer magazine business is becoming increasingly a niche play, and B2B publishing is becoming a lower risk gambit as the Internet plays a steadying role. The thirst for education services for all ages in Asia continues, and the top global institutions are investing in local facilities as well as enticing students overseas to study. The tourism business continues to boom, despite the occasional set-back, with intra-regional traveller numbers soaring as China’s masses start to venture overseas, and segment-targeted hotel developments springing up at an unprecedented pace.

New platforms like digital TV, mobile content and IPTV are generating huge interest and hype, with technological progress being made all the time and the boundaries between traditional media segments becoming more and more blurred. But, as yet, the winning offerings and business models that will capture real revenue remain largely unknown, in what will eventually be a multi-billion dollar digital business.

Added to the market and business dynamics, the Media & Leisure industry as a whole is always potentially sensitive to government and political issues and intervention – but that is all part of the fascination we have for this dynamic and promising sector.
