16-Jun-05 Hong Kong, June 16, 2005 - The Chinese business research and consulting industry is estimated to be worth 800 million US dollars. Having only really taken off in the late 1990s, the industry is now growing at an annual rate in excess of 20 percent. In a recent Fusion Consulting study on how the largest companies in the region make use of business intelligence in strategic planning, large local Chinese corporations were found to be most interested in macro-level business environment trends as well as technology related intelligence, as opposed to more tactical market research. Most of these companies say that the main benefit of carrying out such market intelligence and competitive intelligence has been an increase in their awareness of the wider market environment, allowing them to plan more informed strategies. Chinese corporations interviewed included both private and public enterprises such as China Petroleum & Chemical, China Mobile and CNOOC. Conducted in May 2005, this study covered 11 countries in total, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. "In the rapidly developing and ever more competitive China market, top companies are telling us they increasingly need reliable business research on which to base strategic decisions. Foreign players who have been enjoying product superiority are now finding local companies can match them on quality and undercut them on price. They need competitive insights. Local firms are hungry and are expanding fast. They need market forecasts and to understand likely future developments in pricing, margins and supply chains," said Peter Read, Director at the Hong Kong- and Singapore-based business intelligence consultancy Fusion Consulting. In a move to address these business intelligence needs, Fusion Consulting has today relocated its China unit from Hong Kong to Shanghai. The new office is headed by Jennifer Ding, an experienced business intelligence practitioner with nearly ten years of strategic advisory and business research exposure. She has previously advised companies such as Bausch & Lomb, DuPont , Heinz, HSBC, Philips, and Sony on their market expansion in China and Asia. Commented Jennifer Ding, head of Fusion Consulting Shanghai, "I am very excited about the new office. We look forward to providing our expertise to both foreign and Chinese corporations, and helping them expand and gain competitive advantage in China and the Asia-Pacific region." The Shanghai office will provide business research and strategy consulting services to foreign companies in China, and large local Chinese corporations who wish to expand in Asia or globally, including market entry, expansion strategy, competitive intelligence, customer intelligence, partner evaluation, supply chain analysis and market modelling.
