Construction steel industry sets its sights higher in China
The world’s imagination was ignited with the recent unveiling of the egg-shaped steel structure of the National Grand Theatre in Beijing.
While steel structures are widely used in China’s state buildings, stadiums, factories and high-rise commercial buildings, less than 5% of its residential buildings are steel structures, according to Luru Chen, Director of the Committee of Experts at the China Steel Structure Association. This is exceptionally low compared with countries such as the US and Japan, where the figure can be as high as 50%.

In June 2006, the Chinese Ministry of Construction issued its “Green Building Evaluation Criteria”, stating that steel structure systems should be promoted. Together with related government bodies, it has been drafting and revising standards regarding construction steel quality, design, manufacturing, construction, etc..
This is good news for the steel industry and the China Steel Structure Association, which predicts that China’s demand for steel structures will only keep growing. By the end of 2010, construction steel consumption is projected to reach 6% of the country’s overall steel output, approaching 18 million tons.
